Dark or Light? How to Choose the Correct Variant?
If you’re looking at a SOFT99 wax such as Fusso Coat, you’ll notice that it comes in two variants: Light and Dark. This often raises the question: which one should you choose?
While both variants provide the same core protection, SOFT99 formulates them slightly differently to complement different paint colours. Choosing the variant that matches your vehicle colour allows you to get the most out of the cleaning, gloss-enhancing, and filling properties of the product.
Which Variant Should You Choose?
As a general rule, lighter paint colours benefit from the Light variant, while darker paint colours benefit from the Dark variant.
Why Does SOFT99 Offer Light and Dark Variants?
Although the two products share the same protection technology, they are not identical formulations.
The Dark variant contains a slightly higher wax content and more fillers, while the Light variant contains slightly higher levels of cleaning agents and solvents. These differences are relatively small, but they help optimize the wax for different paint colours and conditions.
The Dark variant is designed to enhance gloss and visual depth on darker paints, while the Light variant places a greater emphasis on cleaning ability, which is particularly useful on lighter colours where contamination tends to be more visible.
What Are the Differences?
- Wax Content
The Dark variant contains slightly more wax than the Light variant. This contributes to a richer appearance and helps maximize gloss, especially on darker paint colours. - Fillers
The Dark variant also contains more fillers. These can help reduce the visibility of very fine imperfections, swirl marks, and light marring that tend to stand out more on dark paint. - Cleaning Ability
The Light variant contains slightly higher levels of solvents and cleaning agents. This gives it a greater ability to remove oily residues and light contamination from the paint surface before the protective layer. - Ease of Application
Light variant is slightly softer and easier to apply and buff off. - Gloss
The Dark variant generally delivers slightly higher levels of gloss and depth on darker colours. This is one of the primary reasons Soft99 recommends it for dark-coloured vehicles.
Can You Use the Wrong Variant?
Yes.
Using the Light variant on a dark vehicle or the Dark variant on a light vehicle will not damage the paint and will still provide excellent protection. However, you may not receive the full benefit of the wax.
For example, a dark-coloured vehicle may not achieve the same level of gloss enhancement when using the Light variant, and the additional cleaning ability of the Light formula is generally less beneficial on darker paint colours.
Likewise, a light-coloured vehicle may not benefit as much from the additional wax content and fillers found in the Dark variant, while its reduced cleaning ability may be less effective at removing light contamination and oily residues compared to the Light version.
For best results, it is recommended to follow the colour guidance and choose the variant that matches your vehicle.
